ekg high blood pressure?

i have high blood pressure(i know from donating blood) i was in my doctors office about 2 weeks ago because i had strep. and i asked about my blood pressure and it was 150over78 and she said that she wanted to see me in 2 weeks. i went back 3 days ago and it was 140over76 she asked me some questions one of them was if i ever have chest pain and i do some times so she had the nurse give me an ekg the first time the nurse did it she got a really funny look on her face then she checked the leads and did it again. then my doctor came back and said that i was "probably" fine but she was going to schedule me an appointment with a cardiologist. i go to see the cardiologist in 2 days and i am a little worried because i got mixed signals. what will the cardiologist do? why the second ekg? what might be wrong with me? i am 18. thank you for any information or experiences similar to mine.
Answer:
It's a wild guess. If they were worried about your blood pressure, they might have wanted the EKG to look for signs of hypertrophy (muscle enlargement much like weight training does for skeletal muscle). But the 140/76 makes that unlikely. If they were worried about the chest pain issue, quite odd at your age, then they'd likely have been looking for changes in the ST segments or T waves, and might have seen a J-point elevation or a non-specific minor T-axis thing that, while quite normal in your age group, looks a lot like an abnormality. It sounds like they may be a bit overcautious, but since we don't know what your doctor does, it's best to keep the appointment and have some reassurance. It would be most surprising if the cardiologist did anything past, perhaps, an echocardiogram (ultrasound exam), if even that.
You could have some type of conduction issue. Electric impulses travel through the heart in a certain direction and sometimes people have conduction that's a little different. It's better to get checked out by a cardiologist to be safe... good luck.

I don't have high blood pressure but always excite the nurses when they do an EKG as I have a heart murmur. Basically this is an extra sound, blip, beat in my rhythm. I have had an echo cardiogram and thankfully it is a functional murmur and causes no problems and no restrictions. It was originally found when I was about 16 and having a camp physical. Now I am over 50 (agh!) and have never had a problem.
You don't 'get' hypertension from donating blood.Your above the line rate was too high, but your below the line rate was fine.Did the doctor also do a test for diabetes? [which goes hand in hand with hypertension often]As for the referral to the cardiologist...don't worry - it is often done with folk who are showing signs of hypertension...and since you said you had chest pain from time to time, it could be a case of mlld angina [look it up] which can be controlled by meds.
